I'm just a bored and hungry developer. I'm like, what can I chew on that would be simple and useful?

The Beginning

Wolf Studios started with a vision to elevate concrete design beyond the ordinary. Our journey began with training at the Concrete Design School in Kansas, where we learned to create countertops, furniture, and sinks using a proprietary mix that is harder, denser, and stronger than traditional concrete.

I realized that the initial dataset I would need to collect in order to train a custom YOLOv8 model would be unattainable without hundreds of devices deployed with no feature being delivered to the users (just collecting data), and an unlikely scenario if you ask me.

The Breakthrough

moondream.ai came along with their latest model and infrastructure, solving that problem. Their VLM is capable of reliably telling me:

• What color is the traffic light closest to me?
• What lane am I in?

It can tell me that using low resolution images in various weather conditions, from a low power camera sensor, transferred by the mobile phone app connected in the background to the server for analysis.

That information along with timing, GPS, and other data is used to build a self-improving timing network.

This is all working on the prototype, today.

Smart Traffic Lights

As for "smart" traffic lights, that data will be integrated from the same systems Audi uses in their instrument cluster traffic light countdown timer, instantly enabling perfect timings every time, but they are far from the majority of traffic lights in use within the United States.

The Vision

This solution covers both scenarios, and the future of traffic can be well informed, well organized, and human driver friendly.

As the network grows, it is important to remember it may not always be accurate, but will quickly improve as the device remains connected while driving. Once it learns your normal routes, you will notice improvements in reliability.
